Kids quilt too!

Today we spent the day at the Westport Farmers Market. We sold tickets for the quilt raffle, made a quilt with the kids (and some grown ups!) to be sent to Japan with the money for Red Cross, and had purple basil lemonade from Peace Tree Desserts. They did such a great job, and never doubted the greatness of their work. Kids have no filter and are so good at being in the moment and getting lost in the task at hand. I learned a few things, to say the least.

This quilt was actually pieced together during Jennifer Paganelli's "Girls World" book signing last month, by all of her loyal fans. I just quilted it up and framed it with vintage cotton trim and it was ready for the raffle! So when Jennifer announced her one day fabric sale last Friday, we decided it was time to share. The tickets were only $1 each, and we had just one day to sell. We raised over $100. and the winner is Heide Mueller-Hatton, from Branford, CT! Lucky girl.Thanks to everyone who shared in this fundraising event! The money raised will be going to the Red Cross.

The tsunami in Japan and the series of tornados in the midwest have left me feeling helpless and faraway from those in need. (Light bulb!)Time for another fundraiser!
We did it before, when the earthquake devastated Haiti, raising almost $4,000.00.
We whipped up 8 Quilts For Christmas for the homeless shelter in Bridgeport with no time to spare.
So, now we are challenged with two different disasters in two different hemispheres.
My friends have come out like gang buster to pitch in. Jennifer Paganelli has donated her perky Sis Boom fabric for some of the quilts. We raffled one off at her sale this week, raising funds for the folks in the midwest.
A new friend in Seattle, Washington, Pat Belyea, has been oh os generous and donated a few quilts worth of rare vintage yukata cotton that she imports from Japan. This fabric is such an honor to work with- hand dyed and traditionally made for kimonos.
Last but not least, my dear friend, James Bosco who is creative director at McCalls patterns has sent his own quilt, an amazing 80'' x80'' quilt with the Japanese fan pattern. He also got his co-workers to involved, donating about 40 squares
to be assembled and quilted. Many , many thanks.
The plan is to send the "care quilts" that we make to Red Cross in the Mid- West, as shipping to Japan is hundreds of dollars. Then, we are going to raffle off James' quilt and the one that I made with the Yukata cotton and send the funds to Red Cross Japan. Each ticket is $5.00 and checks can be made payable to "Red Cross". Specify which quilt you want tickets for-

West Indies Voodoo Magic quilt.

This Sis Boom line, West Indies, inspired me to employ some tricky techniques. The "voodoo" like magic blocks in the center are really pretty easy to make, once you know the tricks. It's the same technique used to create the scalloped border. My friend Helen Bergner shared a link to "10 minute Block" video tutorial for this effect- thanks Helen! There on youtube I found the technique (same concept) for the scalloped "flying geese".Give me until the end of the week to get the pattern posted...

This first of a series of plant hangers was inspired by my Dad, who created eclectic assemblage masterpieces with anything and EVERYTHING within his reach.
I used my incredible recall for things of little or no significance and whipped up a macrame plant hanger with a few vintage model horses and chandelier crystals. In the '70's, I was quite the macrame aficionado, putting my hand to many an owl wallhanging and pieces of odd, (and I mean ODD), pieces of jewelry.
More to come... whether you like it or not.
The plant hanger is mine, the rest are my father's, Captain Norman George DeWeir, amazing creations.

Sophie is one of the star models photographed for Jennifer Paganelli's craft book, Girls World, published by Chronicle. She is also Jennifer's niece!
Sophie chose 3 fabrics for her custom quilt. Why so green?
Maybe she likes green so much because she has the most beautiful green eyes, or because she looks so good in green, or because it picks up the green in Ollie's eyes...
Either way, this quilt is a winner.

At Westport Farmers Market with Peace Tree Desserts.

Robyn Eads is at it again! She opened up her Peace Tree Desserts booth for the season premiere with a bang. The grand opening for the Westport Farmers Market was just what I needed to attend to get in the mood for summer. This spring has had its share of dismal days, and I am finding it hard to fathom that Memorial Day weekend is upon us.
No worries. After experiencing my first "Cold Roman" from Donnie Rausand a chocolate expresso cookie from Robyn I was buzzing!
From market to home with a bag of spring salad greens, fiddle head ferns, and a wedge of aged goat cheese from Beltane Farm and I am ready to sing Yankee Doodle all day long!
By the way, nice aprons and banner.... If I do say so myself! In fact, they will be available at the market and on The Peace Tree website store. (I also do custom orders).
Order one when you get your Cajeta Caramel sauce with Apple Jack. Great on ice cream, or stirred into your coffee.

A tribute to Kate McGarrigle.

I am honored, once again, to make a small contribution to raise funds and awareness to clear cell sarcoma, a rare cancer that affects connective tissue such as bone, muscle, nerves and cartilage.
Kate McGarrigle's good friend (and mine),ceramist Mae Mougin, asked me to help make silk screened towels for the last fundraiser that Kate attended at The Royal Albert Hall in London, Christmas 2009. Sadly, Kate succumbed to the sarcoma a few weeks later.
A year and a half later, Kate's son Rufus and daughter Martha have come together with other talented friends who wish to pay her homage and help find a cure and a way to help those with the disease.

Native American nod.

I have always had a fondness for everything Native American, and started collecting Navajo rugs in the early 1980's.
This quilt is made entirely of Japanese fabrics, some woven Daiwabo, all 100% cotton. The cross on the middle is a loosely woven hand dyed textile, and I chose to leave some of the selvedges exposed.
The backing is from Denyse Schmidt's Hope Valley line.

What an honor for me. Way back when all of Britain was preparing for the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, I was honored to work with Scottish make up artist Linda Mason. She could do beautiful traditional make up, like for a British Vogue cover we did with Barry Lategan, but even then was pushing the limits. One job we did for Bazaar was with Art Kane, white face with a painters pallet of colors splashed on my face, and it is one of my favorites.
Last year she invited me to be photographed along with other contemporaries, (i.e. women of a certain age), and this was the outcome. I am so thrilled and honored- I may have to show my true colors and buy my own portrait!Perhaps a quilt swap? So vain... but, seriously- when will I ever look like that again.
The experience was exhilarating and she really encouraged me to be myself for the picture. The funny thing was I had to go to a big fancy Christmas party in the city that night, and I still had green paint in my hair. I felt very downtown. Thank you, Linda for such a great time.

'70's remix.

This vintage quilt top, found on ebay for a song, was made in the 1970's, and left for me to finish in 2011. I love the odd fabric choices and the giant log cabin motif. My kind of quilter... whoever you are. New life for a great piece.
The fabric for the backing is from British designer Cath Kidston
The "David Bowie" chair I shot it on was given to us by our great friends, Ronnie Stam and Jan Eleni. They call it that because he was photographed on it a few years back. A Glam rock chair for a '70's quilt top with a fab UK backing. Jennifer Paganelli's Sis Boom fabrics, always with a retro flair, were perfect for the binding.

Jennifer Paganelli had me make a piece for them to display at Quilt Market in Salt Lake City representing her newest line, Honey Child. I am particularly fond of the hot colors- pinks and oranges- and love the East Indian feel of the Dana line.
Forgive the many pictures of Ollie, but it has been awhile since I have photographed a quilt, and he became very excited. Nothing worse than an out of work model trying to hog the camera...

Tortilla Tutorial. The real deal.

My nephew, Esteban (Stevo), and his family came over for Sunday stew. He knew I made the tortilla cozies and decided it was time I learned to make my own fresh corn tortillas.
I had a tortilla press, but you can use a glass pie place for pressing, and we used Steve's electric griddle on the highest setting. Just follow the directions on the bag and watch them disappear!
They didn't get much time spent in the cozy before they were served up with Kate's butter, Cabot cheddar cheese and green Tabasco.

That's Hot! DIY Tortilla Cozy.

You've heard of a tea cozy- a quilted comforter in the shape of a tea pot, to keep your tea from cooling off too quickly.
This is a "Tortilla Cozy"- 100% all cotton quilted pockets that you can slip your toasted burrito wrappers to keep caliente.
You can heat your tortillas over an open gas flame like we do, or you can take a paper towel, sprinkle a little water on it, and slip it in with some fresh tortillas. Place them in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. Use until it needs washing. You can throw it in the machine with your laundry. They also double as a great looking trivet or hot pad.
I used some Robert Kaufman "Cilantro" orange fabric, and some vintage flour sack fabric with a Mexican motif.
Quilt the fabric (all cotton batting or bamboo) before cutting the shape/circle.
Bind 1/2 of each of the circles, then sew right sides out and bind the naked edges together,
OR sew from one bound end to the other bound end with right sides together and flip inside out.
Embellish with ric-rac if you want to be really fancy.

Food Journaling for Dummies.

Well, I started in earnest with my diet and fitness program that was custom designed for me by Maddi and Debra at Lean and Chic, but it all came to a standstill and I couldn't "figure" out why. Then I realized I had been resisting a very vital part of the regime- food journaling. Maybe it was just another thing to do on my "to do" list, or maybe I didn't want to share what I had actually been ingesting. Some things were not on the list... in fact, most of them weren't! So, who was I kidding? How can I make this fun and inspiring? I made a food journal! I embellished my little book with articles and images from a 1970's Teen magazine that contained all sorts of well meaning but totaling damaging information ("How I nabbed Flab, by Fat Franny") on food and fitness. I included snippets from the celebrity Fat to Famous article on how the stars stay slim, a five day diet regimen, and a few pics showing how-to spot toning exercises. Included at the end are pictures to inspire, new looks to dream about- even a full page cut out of a dreamy guy from a Johnson & Johnson Baby Oil ad! The page keeper is a measuring tape, and a longer tape, big enough for upper and lower thigh measurements will keep it safe and secure from unwanted viewers! Now, if this doesn't work, I don't know what will! Wish me luck- bikini season is just around the corner....

Peace Tree Dessert Apron #2.

I'm all about promoting and supporting small businesses, especially when what they sell is what they have made themselves. So this is why I cannot stop creating new aprons for my new friend, Robyn Eads of Peace Tree Desserts. Each delectable dessert she crafts with love and natural ingredients is a "peace" of art in itself.
The first apron was made with a more organic palette and organic material when possible. This all cotton apron was inspired by a photo she sent me from an Anthropolgie catalog... a little brighter, with vintage trims and a dirndl style apron with pockets. The bird motif on this Valorie Wells Bird Paisley for Free Sprit was a choice I made... maybe inspired by chef Robyn's first name???
The logo will go on the top under the little ruffle and fabric covered buttons.
We meet tomorrow, but may try to knock out another tonight... I hope she likes them. If not, guess what mom's getting for Mother's Day?!

Peace Tree Desserts Apron.

Baker extraordinaire, Robyn Eads of Peace Tree Desserts, has commissioned me to design a new apron for her. She will be filming a series of videos and has some surprises to unveil next month, so I'm a little under the gun.
Robyn prides herself in using all natural and organic ingredients whenever possible. I am going to design a few aprons for her to choose from, using her requested color palettes, logo, and whenever I can I will use organic fabrics and inks.
This is the first apron, sans the logo which will be silk screened on the 2 front pockets, made with Japanese ecrulat lyceenne from Quilters Alley in Ridgefield and organic bamboo. Raw edges rule and vintage cotton lace floats along the hemline.
The other option will be more colorful and frilly- but both have to be short, with pockets, and above all... "pretty".
Let me know which ones you like.

Vintage velvet.

There is nothing softer or more luxurious than this velvet pillow, except for maybe the unfinished quilt underneath it. I have quilted cotton velvet before, but this is the real thing. While it's a little tricky to cut and sew the effect is to die for. I hope to have the quilt done and hand stitched this weekend.

Send a message with these little boudoir pillows that are printed on vintage feed sacks. I burned out a screen with some traditional Valentine heart doilies on my Yudu, but I think you could probably blot some paint right on one and get a really lovely effect. Fill it with fluff, or flax and lavender for a pillow that can be heated up in the microwave or put in the freezer... depending on your mood.

My niece is putting me to the test. I like to think I am prolific, but my Becky had twins- 5 weeks ahead of schedule- and I need to make them quilts before our visit on Saturday. I decided to feature a black and white original photo printed on fabric to be the focal point, and to disperse color here and there among Sis Boom black and white prints.
Owen will get the deer in the woods with primary colors.
Chloe will get a sea shell with various shades of pink and white.
One down, one to go.
Quilting to be completed tomorrow- ready for a ride up to Providence , RI by the weekend!
I am a proud Great Aunt... can't wait.

That could mean so many things. But in this case I want to make more frames like this one, now available at SPACE in Bridgeport, CT. The print is of an adult film poster I found in Maine last year and gave to Tim for Valentines Day. Now it's time to share the love.
I promise to take more pictures (not with an iphone!) of all of the amazing pieces that artists have made and sell at this super groovy artists cooperative owned by entrepreneur Robert Rackear. I am in good company here with quilter Denyse Schmidt, ceramist Maeera Mougin who was recently featured on the Light Whisperer blog, among other local talents.

In this particularly white winter, I find myself longing for something green and lush. While Puerto Rico is out of the question, this whole cloth quilt made form Queen Streets "Maddie" and "Dolin" in jade and aqua is just what the doctor ordered.
"Dolin" is a whispy green and blue floral on a white background, and "Maddie" is decidedly greener on the other side- and more mod.
This quilt followed by a regimen of wheat grass shots should get me through to Ground Hogs Day. Or maybe a Mojito?

Felted Pony.

This year decided to sell my horse. He had become a huge part of my life. In his absence, I will continue to celebrate my passion for horses by creating things that will remind me that his energy is always around me. This felted pony was made with wool fiber and Alpaca fiber from Halcyon Yarn in Maine.If you are ever in Bath, Maine- make this stop a priority. I haven't picked up my knitting needles in years, but this store made me want to! But I went there for felting supplies, and actually managed to stick to the task at hand. I will knit again... just not now.
I have this pony hanging from my window with the horizon in the background. I imagine him running with wild abandon through the snow, like Tys. In fact, I think I will felt up a herd for him... and me.

I found this tutorial on the Purl Bee blog and waited a year before I tried it. I love the 3-D-ness of this pillow. I can't wait to try a few other shapes and colors. Because I "heart" this pillow so much, and Valentines Day is just around the bend, I will share (I always do!) the how to. This blog is always an inspiration to me, and I hope it will "bee" to you, too!

I promised my friend, '70's and '80's super model Nancy Donahue, that I would make her a quilt back in March 2010. It took me way too long! However- i was aiming for a perfect interpretation of her infectious laughter, sunny disposition, resemblance to Doris Day, and faithful friendship.
This quilt, made from 2 packs of "jellyroll" strips from Kate Spains "Verna" (moda) line, holds hands a sunny, butter yellow print from Jennifer Paganellis Sis Boom "Poodle" line. Quite fitting, since these fabric designers are good buddies, too!
The jellyroll pieces were "braided" together- Hence, the "Friendship Braid Quilt". It is an over sized queen, which was a bear to quilt- but with lots of trimming and measuring i was able to square it up. This often happens when quilting long, narrow strips together. The pretty daisy quilting is a nod to Doris Days, "Please don't eat the daisies!" song. I hope she likes it as much as I liked making it for her. She's the one on the left.

I busted my butt to get these quilts finished so they could be delivered by Christmas, only to find out they cannot accept them unless laundered. So, now it is two days after Christmas, I'm snowed in and I have them freshly washed. They do always look better once they have been washed anyway, and they saw them and know they are coming. Once the roads are clear, they will go back to Bridgeport. I think they look amazing.

I was so busy with work and quilting this holiday season, I actually threatened not to put a real tree up. After all the kids are in their 20's, and Tim tends to mutter bah humbug from Thanksgiving until New Years Day. Somehow this threat even threw him for a loop!My husband spray painted a dead trees branch silver and he decorated that with silver and gold ornaments.
The kids were still not satisfied. Too minimalist.
It just so happened that Jack, my son, found a tree on the side of the road with a "Free Tree" sign. He threw it ( along with the sign in case I doubted the origins of said tree) into the back of the pick up and brought it home... and so we have a tree after all, and a beautiful one at that!
Before I could deliver the quilts today we had to have our traditional Christmas morning, eating a big breakfast and opening gifts under the tree. My old Mexican circle skirt no longer fits me, but made a great tree skirt instead.
Now that all of that is done, I will try to get a well stuffed husband off the couch to photograph the quilts for the blog. Good luck with that!

And so, the 100 Quilts for Christmas Challenge has been a huge success. By Kate's account, over 120 quilts were donated to shelters for babies and children around the country- and that's not including the 7 we made at Musical Squares Night! The tops are done, thanks to family (including my daughter, husband, niece and nephew!), friends, friends of friends and neighbors.Even star designer- and dear friend- Jennifer Paganelli of Sis Boom fabrics came to sew! What an honor.
Some of these folks had not sat behind a sewing machine since middle school home ec class, and some like my husband Tim,(in hat) and his friend (award winning musician) Chris Brown had never sewn before. I cut the fabric ahead of time so that part was done. I had different bags filled with fabric for different quilts just waiting to be sewn together and thrown on the design wall for completion. There were also 3 quilts constructed of squares made by my friend James Bosco (fashion Editor at Vogue and Butterick Patterns) and his colleagues Pam Brooks and Laurie Jackson- Murray. They were so beautifully made- maybe I should take a few lessons from them!
It was a mad dash to get these done with wine and cheese and really great music- I can't wait to do it again in February for Valentines Day, and in the Spring with Denyse Schmidt and her Greenfield Hill Collection.
I go off to quilt and bind on Tuesday, so check back before Christmas eve to see them all finished, and before they go to find a place with a child at The Bridgeport Center for Women and Families.

It's beginning to feel a lot like "100 Quilts for Christmas", everywhere you go!

This concept of "100 Quilts for Christmas" has really inspired me! We will have our very first Musical Squares event tomorrow night, where we will make up as many quilt tops as possible. Plus, I have friends who have been sending quilt squares and tops for me to finish... oh, me thinks me has created a monster! I may be quilting right up until Christmas Eve! My dear friend, James Bosco (pictured with me last Christmas), who is creative director at McCalls patterns has sent his own quilt, 4 more random blocks, and has the entire McCalls Pattern company mailing in a stack of squares they have been working on during their lunch hours!
I also have received support from Sis Boom's own Jennifer Paganelli, who has donated scraps for the quilts, backs, and take home fat quarters from her most recent lines!
I had invited Denyse Schmidt (also a local CT resident) but she can't make it. However, she has offered to host a Musical Squares event in the spring, using her Greenfield Hill collection.... The generosity is mind boggling! This is the Christmas Spirt like I have never experienced it before.
Thank you to Janice Roy of Little Red Quilt House, who is always so generous and lets me use her long arm whenever I need to. To Helen Bergner, a fabulous and prolific quilter in her own right, who houses the Gammil machine and is always showing me new block techniques and tricks!

Pink Elephants on Parade.

This quilt for the "100 Quilts for Christmas" is a whole cloth quilt. It has vintage pink elephants on swings on one side and a mod animal flannel on the back. It's trimmed with hot pink vintage fringe.
Okay, that brings my total to 4 quilts. Next week I hope to get a group of people together to join in the festive spirit of the holiday to have a quilting bee of sorts. Wine, tapas, Brazilian Jazz and a few dozen sewing machines... could be dangerous- but all for a good cause. I already have people signing up and I promise NO SEWING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! I will guide you (as little as possible) in the process we will make as many squares as we can that will then be quilted up and donated to The Center For Women and Families in Bridgeport, CT. .
If you can't make it and want to send a 12'' square, we will find it a home. Just email me for details.

Here is another baby quilt top about to be quilted and bound this Wednesday for the "100 Quilts For Christmas" project. To accelerate quilt production I am organizing a quilting event here in Wilton, CT next Wednesday night, December 15th from 6-9, p.m..
Come and play "Musical Squares"- no quilting or sewing experience necessary. It is an exercise in quilting that requires you to let go of any aesthetic agendas and work as a team for a good cause. After we have created enough blocks, I will put them together quilt, and deliver them.
The baby quilts will be delivered to The Center For Women and Families in Bridgeport, CT.
We will have wine and tapas for the taking, plus great music (thanks to DJ Tim "Brazil Fest" Geaney) to quilt by. Everyone is welcome, but you need to let me know if you are coming so that I can be prepared.
A $5.00 fee will cover batting and quilting expenses.

Texas Caviar.

The first time I had this was when my "seester"-in-law, Julie, made this in her Hillsboro, California kitchen. Knowing we would have a few vegetarians and everyone trying to stay healthy as winter approaches, we made Texas Caviar for Thanksgiving as an alternative to guacamole. It's healthier, high in fiber, only requires one ripe avocado (finding affordable and edible avocados can prove to be a challenge here on the East Coast!) and is a great leftover. It gets better a day or two after it has first been made, is great to add to a salad, or as we like to do, throw it into a fresh, warm soft corn tortilla for a quick healthy meal.
Texas Caviar
2 tbs. red wine vinegar
2tsp. (or more hot sauce- We use Franks or Tapatia)
2 Tbsp. olive oil
2 cloves garlic
1 firm ripe avocado
1 can black eyed peas
1 can black beans
1 ear fresh corn shaved right off the cob
2/3 cup chopped green onions
2/3 cup fresh chopped cilantro
2 roma tomatoes chopped (seeds removed)
Rinse and drain beans and peas. mix all ingredients together and stir,
Serve with Tostitos "Scoops".
Salt, pepper and more hot sauce and cilantro to taste.

Mexican flavor for Thanksgiving Day leftovers! In the past we have done full on Mexican Thanksgiving dinner, mole turkey enchiladas and all! But this "sopa" has become as much a tradition as the day itself. It's refreshing to add some international flavors after days of mashed potatoes and gravy. Not that there's anything wrong with that!
Take that turkey carcass and make a really rich stock with few cloves of fresh garlic, celery, carrots and onions. Drain the stock reserving and bits of turkey meat and refrigerate over night. NOW you can throw out that old bird. (Don't forget to thank him.) Skim off excess congealed fat. Take 1 lb. of ground organic turkey meat, 1 egg, 1 cup of precooked brown rice (or white if thats what you have in the pantry) 1 tablespoon of dried Mexican Oregano (or any oregano),salt and pepper.Take off any rings you are wearing and make golf ball sized meatballs and drop them into the boiling stock. Add 1 chopped green chiles and reserved turkey meat from the carcass. Season broth to taste and serve with fresh chopped cilantro and quesadillas, and have your Franks Hot Sauce,La Valencia or Pico Pica on the table for the spice lovers.... ( nephew STEVO!).

Thanksgiving gala.

We had a "super" ( that's with French accent) Thanksgiving celebration. We were so fortunate to have our daughter and son, Genevieve and Jack, their cousins Sophie and her friend Sarah, Steve and Jennifer and their 3 year old James Declan, and a few friends there to join us. Karim and his wife Aurora (who looks like Aurora in Sleeping Beauty!), and their friends Miriam and Patrick drove oput from Brooklyn. After I infused them all with Bourbon and sparkling apple cider punch, complete with horse shaped ice float, we noshed on some hummus, babaganoush, homemade pita bread and some completely addictive dipping oil that Karim brought from his Moroccan restaurant in Brooklyn. I'm making my reservations NOW!
From the living room we rolled into the dining room for a traditional turkey, brussell sprouts with cream and bacon, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes and Waldorf salad.
EVERYONE brought a dessert, and Patrick made crepes with jam and Nutella. He was, without a doubt, the entertainment for the evening! What a fun time.
This year I am thankful for family and friends, old and new. And left overs!

No, not the sandwich... this is a special quilt for the daughter of my dear friend, Sheila Gray. Sheila is a coach to many talented actors in NYC- including my son, Jack. She is so generous with him that I wanted to make something special for her family, since they haver been so kind and opened their home to Jack. Her eight year old daughter,Sofia, affectionately known as Panini, loves pink, orange and red. I pulled from the latest Sis Boom Collection (Queen Street), some older Sis Boom and Denyse Schmidt, and included some vintage blocks from my favorite personal stash! They all came together like the cast of an Oscar award winning ensemble. I love this quilt. I can't think of a better way to show my love and admiration to a friend. German Blue Plum Cake

I first had this cake as agirl at my friends Aileen Gribbin's house. Her Oma and Opa, ( who looked and sounded like Hansel and Gretel as grown ups), would come to visit and I new the cake would soon come out of the oven. I found this recipe to be the simplest, and I doubled it for a neighborhood block party. Just be sure not to over bake it, and quite frankly- I prefer it without the nuts... and I like nuts!
PFLAUMEN KUCHEN (GERMAN BLUE PLUM
CAKE)
1/4 lb. butter
2 eggs
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 c. milk (or more)
2 1/2 to 3 lb. sm. Italian plums, depending on size of pan
About 1 c. chopped nuts
Cream butter and sugar. Mix well the eggs, flour, salt, baking powder, vanilla, and milk. Grease a jelly roll pan and preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Spread dough on pan. Halve, pit and wash plums. Lay plums on dough with cut side up and touching one another. Sprinkle plums with sugar and cinnamon. Then dot each plum with a little piece of butter. Sprinkle nuts over the plums. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

This "rug" is anything but a complicated procedure or pointless! And they say "garbled nonsense" like it's a bad thing!
I used the long ends of quilts and big chunky scraps from the Sis Boom Poodle and So St. Croix collections sewn together wherever they fit, and contained the kaleidoscope of colors with vintage wool fringe.
Paint the back with several coats of a non-skid backing, such as Saf-T-Bak, to transform this afghan style quilt into a rug.
Or not. It would look super groovy on a rumpus room sofa.

It's been a crazy past few months and I have had to put way too much time into uncreative activities. That's not to say I haven't been creating- just having trouble sitting down, documenting and sharing. But I have a few exciting things going on in my head and finally feel in the mood to blog, once again. I'm getting ready to sell my wares at the Fairfield Hunt Club show here in Connecticut.I have been wanting to use some of my old ribbon rosettes in some crafts, as I have done before. Alas, no, they are not all mine, but many belonged to my friends and others were pulled from ebay.I wasn't sure about that last wreath, but when Ollie decided to take a snooze under it, all of a sudden it wasn't so bad after all.
I also haven't finished up with the "bouquet " idea... I think I could take that a bit farther. Wouldn't they make grand center pieces at a BBQ?

Here is a quilt for little baby dude , Lucian. His family are beach goers from Long Island, and thouht this quilt might be a good visual prep for the real thing. Soft buttery Anna Maria voiles mixed with vintage table cloth. Quilting stitches in wind swirls, sail boats, whales, sea shells, sea horses and yo! Faux wood grain, bro!

I want to make puppets.

So after a totally fun filled, inspiring morning with Sarah- Head Mermaid/choreographer/costume/set and puppet designer,my friend Holly and some of the other mer-gals, I was a-buzz with new found crafting energy! The Puppet Kitchen was filled with amazing artifacts and objects and power tools and glue guns and swords... my head is still spinning. And of course, puppets. My favorites were the giant blue horse, the one that looks like Keith Richards on a good day,and the monkey with the very realistic backside that Sarah is pictured with. Also love the pin-donut and the egg head pin cushion atop THE ORIGINAL BIG BIRD MAILBOX! One of the studio artists worked with Jim Henson right out of high school and a few muppet heads are lying around here and there.
The 36 mermaids, aka "The Sexcamaids", will be performing 5 dance numbers a top a float on June 19th in the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. A Brooklyn version of Nola's Mardi Gras, with Lou Reed and Laurie Andersen as the King and Queen of the parade. What fun. Thanks Holly, for including me in your escapades.I think your head piece look fab, and can't wait to see the finished product. Always so glad to see how other create and where they do it. I could get my puppet on, for sure! Very therapeutic.

Today I will be busy at helping my friend Holly make her costume for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. We are meeting at the The Puppet Kitchen on East 4th Street to meet with other mermaids well equipped with glue guns, glitter, feathers and pasties! I'm not quite sure what I'm in for.
If I wasn't going to be knee deep in sequins, I would be going to the Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair. Alas, I can only be in one place at a time...

Tim helped me make this chalk board that sits just outside of our mud room door. Most of my friends know where to find me if I'm not up in my studio sewing, but for those who don't... I've gone riding. Check the barn first, then the paddock. Or the wood shop where I am painting more of these chalkboards (They can be yours! $75.00) with Rustoleum Chalkboard paint.

Thank you for waiting patiently for me to finish my end of it. Thank you to Jennifer Paganelli for providing the backing and for creating all of the beautiful scraps that made up these 30 squares. Thank you to the girls at Make and Mingle for inviting us to use their space to hold our "bee".
This quilt will be raffled off for $5./ticket or 5 tickets for $20.00. If you would like to be a part of the raffle, leave a comment and I will send you the ticket. You can send me a check, or pay via Paypal. It will be on display at Witchypoo in Wilton, Ct from today, Sunday May 30th-Tuesday June 1st. It will then be at Make and Mingle until a winner will be chosen Friday June 11th. It is 74''x 90", 100 % organic cotton batting, with a candy striped backing. The money will go to Marilyn W. Runaway apron!

Before I even had the chance to photograph it, this butterfly apron flew off and onto Natalie's dress form for at Make and Mingle. I love the Alexander Henry mod print I found there, and the heavier weight gives it a little more substance. The "self belt" is actually functioning and the bakelite vintage buckle was snapped up at Make and Mingle, along with the pink vintage button on the pocket. I think this one maybe pattern worthy.
I am hoping to do my hammock sample in the same fabric. Come and join us for that class, and have your custom hammock done for Dad before his day of worship... of we course, we worship you everyday, dear....

Thanks to the amazing work done by Rebecca from Haiti By Hand, Tammy of Tammy Gilley Studios, and The Quilt Haiti project a few of the quilts I have made for Jennifer Paganelli and her fabric line (Sis Boom) have made it to Haiti already! The collaborative quilt we did at Make and Mingle should be done soon... promises promises.... I swear!
I think that this may be one of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen. Being thousand of miles away I feel so helpless. It's nice to know we could provide some comfort.
Thank you to Jennifer for creating such joyful fabrics, sure to brighten anyones day- just look at that woman's smile!

It was too chilly to wear the beautiful sundress that Jennifer Paganelli had made for me, so I had to do something quick! I ended up with a cute little blazer from anthropologie and skinny jeans and good jewelry. Too casual? So I decided to dress up and old pair of black Steve Madden flats with these cute ribbon rosettes from Make and Mingle. You can buy some (and cool flats,too) just like these there, or rosettes from from M&J Trimming.
Or make your own! I am going to teach my Pillow Addicts Anonymous class at M&M how to embellish with rosettes tomorrow. I'll document the process- sometimes successful, sometimes not...always fun!
....and share with a tutorial tomorrow!

Genevieve's sorority sister, Meredith Marchese, lost her mother to breast cancer just a few weeks ago. Vieve and her AST family members thought it would be nice to have a quilt made to honor her, and to remind Meredith that they are always there for her , and they've "got her back".

Each girl chose a fabric from the Sis Boom fabric line and their name was then printed on muslin and framed within the fabric square. At the center, a special square in remembrance of the mother. The quilting pattern was ribbons, like the pink ribbons that symbolize the fight for a cure for cancer.
This project was a labor of love and I think a great way to show how much they all care.

Vieve's College Graduation.

Our daughter, Genevieve Rose, just graduated (with honors!) from college to begin her career in PR and Media Branding. Here she is with us and surrounded by her beautiful family of AST (Alpha Sigma Tau) sorority sisters. Never having gone to college, my concept of a sorority terrified me. What I found was that being a part of this group of girls gave our daughter the support and love she needed when she was far from home. Thanks, girls for watching over our daughter and giving her the confidence to move forward on her own.
We also learned after listening to the commencement speech and all of the names of graduates, "Rose" had to be one of the most common middle names in 1988!
Congratulations , Genevieve. We are so proud of and happy for you!

Birthday dinner.

Not to toot my own horn, but yesterday was my birthday. Toot toot! (Thank you.)
When asked what I wanted to do to celebrate I suggested grilling up some steaks, a blue cheese wedge salad, twice baked potatoes and red wine. The finished meal never got photographed, as we also snuck a martini in before dinner...
I let the horses out to graze in the yard while Tim got the coals going (sometimes propane just doesn't cut it) and then set the table. I used my new Sis Boom Collette table cloth and all of a sudden it felt like a party! You can have one too. They are available in pink and blue on the Open Sky shop. Jennifer did a beautiful job on these.
It is now 4 a.m., I am blogging, and I think it's safe to say the party is over... back to quilting. I'll share this special project when I am finished with it later today.

Last nights episode of "9 by Design" told the story of a little school friend of the Novogratz family, Jasmina Anema, who suffered from leukemia. The Novogratz clan and other school families put on a great fundraiser to help Jasmina and her mom with medical bills. Jasima was a warrior, but she succumbed to the disease in January.

I just run around taking pictures making sure no one cuts off or sews any fingers together. My students do as they please with my gentle guidance, or prodding with a yardstick when they loose focus. All I know is that it's the fastest and funniest 2 hours of my week. If any projects are completed, that's just fine. Thank you Connie, Jackie, Lisa, "Tracy the Good", "Tracy the Bad" (you know who you are!), and of course my T.A. Karen, of Make and MIngle who is "skirting the issue" better than I could.

Our new baby.

The life of an older school pony can be an uncertain one. Horses are expensive and when the 20 year old lesson horse can no longer take those big jumps without a chance of injury, and it's too much to do lesson after lesson, they find it hard to earn their keep.
Meet Serena. A star jumper at Ox Ridge Hunt Club for years, and then star teacher at Stoneyside Farm in Wilton after that. She is still a great pony to ride, but she deserves to be spoiled now, and she needs to be able to have a nice big stall to lay down in, and her very own paddock. She can still jump and I will give lessons on her once I have conditioned her a bit and she settles into her new surroundings... which she seems to have had no problem with. She and Tys have already bonded, maybe a little more than I would like.....
My friend Lola is going to share her with me, and a few other handpicked friends will learn how to ride, take care of, and love horses with her. We are going to give her all of the tender love and care this princess deserves.
How's that for sounding like a proud momma?

Custom orders are flying in for my silk screened pillows. This one was for a couple who was FINALLY tying the knot. I think the Ralph Lauren boat blueprint fabric is a nice contrast to the skull and cross bones from Kona.

For reasons beyond my control, my Open Sky Shop can only sell 2 Sis Boom aprons at a time. However- I see this as only good news. With Mothers Day just around the corner, you need one and so does your mother. Warning: Your sister and sister-in-law will probably feel left out if they don't have their own Ms. Willy apron with pink stripes.
June being the most popular month for weddings you probably have some cute couple like our friends, Tim and Holly, who love their matching aprons. Holly says wearing these saucy aprons tend to spice up any moment at home! Not just when they are in the kitchen making homemade mole tacos...
Well, I have found reasons for six aprons so far - and I haven't even considered end of year teacher gifts yet!

Women Working Wonders Fundraiser

My dear friend,'80's Super Model Nancy Donahue has talked me into coming up for this great event to raise money for women in need. I have added a few new items to my repertoire, along with my equine and nautical inspired quilts, throws and pillows. A few budget friendly embellished journals, Love Madds repurposed jewelry, MRR Picture Frames, and Sharp Hill Designs bags- all the rage in the Hamptons this spring! Some (YUDU) silk screened reusable organic shopping bags and lunch totes... really cute, no? We all do everything ourselves and we all live within minutes of each other... Wilton has some pretty creative folks.
Nancy will be introducing her new product- The Honey Belle Body Buffer at home cellulite removal device...Got mine!

Our local publication, Wilton Magazine, did a quick ten minute interview with Tim (when Christopher Walken cancelled at the last minute!)... thanks, Chris.
Carolyn Rundle Field did a great job, and I love the portrait by Pam Barkentin- so pensive!
What they couldn't cover in ten minutes was what a great dad and husband he is. He is passionate about gardening and has even started an eco-friendly way to compost horse manure- "The Entre-Manure" blog to come! We will have a booth at Wilton Go Green Festival on May 2nd. In the meantime, check his blog, "The Light Whisperer".
He plays the piano, learning as an adult, and now devotes many hours playing with Acoustic Wilton, which is a group of fabulous musicians on a mission to cure cancer and raise funds for Relay for Life. The next concert is May 14th, an all night vigil at Wilton High School.
He loves wood working and helps me whenever I need power tool abilities for my crafts... I'm limited to the glue gun for good reason!
Did I mention he make the best Mexican food? His Mom, Clarita, was from Sonora.
Thirty years is a long time to be with someone, and I can tell you he never stops surprising me, or making me laugh. A true renaissance man... at times my knight in shining armor.
Keep in mind , however, my favorite saying:
"Behind every great man there is a woman... rolling her eyes!"(Jim Carey)

Has anyone seen "Verna"? Well my friend, home dec star Jan Lemonedes, passed this New York Observer Home magazine onto us because my husband Tim had a picture he did in it. He photographed the "9 by Design" Novogratz family and it was published for this article. FYI, episode 2 airs tonight at 10 on BRAVO! Watch what happens...
Flipping through the pages of my new favorite publication, I see these plates. Kate Spain had just shown them to me on Sunday when we delivered a load of our finest aged manure in their driveway. (Happy Birthday, Kate.) They are available at Crate and Barrel. Way to go!

Whatever happened to the refrigerator magnet?

I am prepping to do a show on Thursday, Girls Night Out, in Rowayton, Ct, and part of the deal is to supply 50 gifts for a goody bag that will be given to the first 50 guests. So I had seen this cute idea for a refrigerator magnet, using old pictures, children's books and playing cards. Some with glitter, some without-which do you prefer? The "blonde" is my shout out to Betty Draper, but most have a horsey thing going on. So, that's what I was busy doing yesterday.
When I go to display them on my fridge for a picture- no go! Stainless steal doesn't work! And what about all of those fancy shmancy kitchens with wood paneled refrigerator doors to match their cupboards! Oh, the horror!
Well, too late now- they did work on my microwave door, and for the picture I put them on the side of my truck.
I forgot to take them off before my husband went to load up the flatbed with composted manure for our friend (fabric designer for Moda, Kate Spain). He was more than a little relieved to see they could be easily removed.

I know most of you can whip up your own Sis Boom home accesories, but if you are like me, time is precious. Why loose sleep when you can order your own Ms. Willy with pink stripes full apron (not the half apron) and the pink and blue Colette table cloths??? They are gorgeous. Our friend and Tim's super talented vocalist for Acoustic Wilton, Kim Troy, needed a pillow for her friend who evidently needs encouragement to do certain things and take chances. These are the words that Kim finds her self repeating on a daily basis, and thought a little reminder when she's not around wouldn't hurt.
"Just say yes!"
Her friend loved it, especially the black patent leather piping. She thought it would look great in her bedroom, but after reading it again, decided it might not be such a good idea! Looks like the living room will be it's new home.

My friend Brooke Brown of Friesians of Color has had another beautiful filly. Born on April 2nd, my mothers 85th birthday, I think she should be named "Erika", like mom. Does anyone else see the Easter Bunny on her side??? Another name option is "Pippy", due to her 4 long, white stockings. She is a stunner! Congratulations to all at Old Tavern Farm!

...and new napkins for the Easter dinner. Love that YUDU screen printer! I made the table cloth a few Sis Boom collections back- still a classic (and classy) fabric. A few left over wheat grass seeds made it onto the mantle under my grandfathers, WPA artist Johann Purer's, oil painting.

You have met the lovely Lola before at Dark Horse Farm. She has visited the bunnies at my friend Linda's. She has been photographed for Sis Boom, and we have delivered our nutrient rich compost to her backyard garden in Brooklyn. What you may not know is how talented she is. I have been collecting her artwork for years, but I did not know what a beautiful writer she is! And while I was struggling to come up with a post for today, this most rejuvenating day of the year, she sent me this.

My die-hard Tuesday morning students made it into Make and Mingle to make some fabulous grocery/beach totes. We all looked a bit like drowned rats when we finally got there (4.9'' rain that day!) but everyone left with a tote in tow. Connie with her springy green and white (Paula Prass?) canvas, Tracy with her Anna Maria Horner Oil Cloth, and my orange and white geo-bag. Next week, who knows? However- I am hoping for better attendance... report cards come out in June!
It just goes to show that you could wear a paper sack, if it's made out of great fabric- like we all got at Make and Mingle.

Sunday was the uber successful Quilt Haiti event at Make and Mingle. I cannot express the joy we all experienced coming together, doing what we love, with loving people- many who we all met for the first time, and many quilting for the first time! Karen and I even experimented with some silk screening of gnomes and Buddha's- all hand drawn by Natalie!
I had two days before I recovered from my quilt hangover- the only remedy being, quilt, eat, quilt, eat... you know? The "old hair of the dog"....
The first 3 squares are from Charlotte Lyons, Kate Spain and Jennifer Paganelli- I wish I could remember who did all of the others. A giant kiss and thank you to everyone who participated, and especially to Natalie, without whose blueberry muffins , I would have never made it!
The finished product should be ready for viewing mid April. Details to follow!

I have to say that my experience teaching (what limited knowledge I have to offer) has been most rewarding. We laugh the whole time, and no one ever makes a mistake! That's because I encourage imperfection. While we attempt to do our very best, we have lowered the bar. That way we all feel accomplished and in the end our projects are "perfect"! Perfectly us.
The Pillow 101 has been a huge success, and will continue on Tuesday mornings at Make and Mingle- projects to be announced. I think we will either make grocery totes or a clutch. I'm leaving it up to the class.
This Sunday is the "Quilt Haiti" workshop with Jennifer Paganelli- some of the blocks have already been mailed in- it is going to be amazing! Thank you to everyone giving their time and creativity to such a good cause. Special thanks to my dear old friends ( not that old) Patty Carroll and Creative Director at Vogue/ Butterick Patterns, James Bosco. Great job on the squares.
One of my first students, Jessica Donahue, moved away to South Carolina, but keeps me posted with her sewing projects. This "Scottie" is a downloadable pattern from Denyse Schmidt (in Sis Boom fabric). We are hoping Denyse will come and teach the Scottie class at Make and Mingle in June. She is trying to squeeze us in!
All in all, a very productive month so far- and spring has just arrived! Yippee!
